It’s finally here! Earth Day 2013! It’s like a holiday to me! This is the U.S.’s 44th Earth Day. The date of April 22nd was designated in 2009 by the U.N. as International Mother Earth Day.ย This year’s focus is “The Face of Climate Change.”
I am, I guess I would say, just shy of being a full blooded tree hugger, but this has been a passion that has grown slowly over the years.
I do have to admit that a small part of me dies every time I see someone throw away a coke can or water bottle! (I honestly did not know there was an actual Ecology flag, but look, now we’ve all learned something new!) Living in Europe had a tremendous impact on me. In Germany you can recycle just about everything. In fact, you are required to by law. They provide you numerous bins and bags and it’s just a way of life. Every day was like Earth Day! So after 3 years of that, it was difficult to come back to find recycling optional, and what could be recycled was so limited. Thankfully, my local government has started accepting many more items in this last year. I wish I had taken a picture of my two overflowing bins this last week!
To start, I am really proud of an article I just published on my Hubs page. I’d really love it if you’d go on over and read it. It’s called Simple Tips for Greener Living. It’s somewhat of a beginners guide to living greener, but, even you pros might learn a thing or two, so check it out!
You must check out the Earth Day official website for information, products, ways to help! I particularly like the Campaigns page, where you can find out how you can help. Like planting a tree, or recycling your ewaste. What is ewaste? Find out here.
Now go recycle something! And don’t forget to check out my Simple Tips for Greener Living article!
While you are checking things out, be sure to check out the upcoming Online Blog Workshop! SPACE IS LIMITED so be sure to visit my post and register! They will be giving away LLC packages from Legal Zoom, Video equipment that’s great for vloggers and bloggers, headphones, gift cards and much more! There is also a giveaway for a blog makeover and gift certificate on that post, so check it out here!

April 22, 2013 at 10:31 amWe always fill up our recycling bin too. But it actually bothers me a little. I wish there was a way to buy more foods without having to use all the plastic and cardboard packaging. I really like the bulk bins at Whole Foods for that reason.

April 22, 2013 at 11:30 amIt bothers me to Marie! I actually have started buying block cheese instead of cheese sticks and sometimes I have to remind myself not to just take the easy way out just for convenience. The packaging is ridiculous. But Terracycle has a brigade for taking back lots of those packaging materials. If you haven’t read my hubs pages article yet, check it out and follow my link!

April 22, 2013 at 10:42 amHappy Earth Day! We are lucky here in my town because we can throw just about everything into the recycle bin (without separating things out) and just put it out on the curb on Friday for pickup. We have reduced our trash significantly in the past couple of year with just our recycling efforts. Don’t forget to add your posts to my “environmentally friendly” blog post list (http://anotherjennifer.com/environmentally-friendly-blog-posts-to-celebrate-earth-day/)!

April 22, 2013 at 11:32 amYes Jennifer, I saw that earlier, thanks for the reminder!! Thankfully our city has started taking a lot more and we don’t have to separate either which is convenient. But it makes me sad on recycle day to see how many people don’t have a bin out. How hard is it to at least toss your bottles and cans in it?

April 22, 2013 at 11:33 amHa ha Chris, not much! Actually, I have been working on that particular post for months. Well, ok, I wrote it months ago for a writing class, and I’ve been tweaking it for months. I pitched it once, got discouraged when I didn’t get a response, and decided to do a Hubs article! You might notice I’ve been a member three months and only have written two articles! ๐
