Why Wouldn't We Want to #FightToxins Moms?

April 4, 2014 By katbiggie 8 Comments

I’ve been doing research on medical and health related topics now for a little while, and some of the information I have come across is, well, quite frankly, so scary and astonishing, I wonder why we are not all calling our representatives every day to have them do something about it. Toxins and their impact on our health, and more specifically, our children’s health and development, is, I believe, one of the most pressing issues that we as mothers should do something about. Because it is something that can be changed.

I am very passionate about our environment and keeping it clean, but more than that, I am passionate about keeping my children healthy, and not exposing them to TOXINS that are linked to cancers, Alzheimers, and so many other issues. So when Social Good Moms sent out a request for moms to write a sponsored post for Seventh Generation and the Fight Toxins Campaign, I could hardly wait to participate. And I am so glad to have been chosen for this special Call to Action to #FightToxins with Seventh Generation.

Shocking, isn’t it?

Here’s a little tidbit:

The Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) was passed in 1976 and has never been updated. Some people might assume that the chemicals used to make products sold in the U.S., like toys and food containers, are regulated and tested for safety — but they are not. Over 80,000 chemicals are currently available for use in the market. The Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) grandfathered in 62,000 chemicals when enacted in 1976 and over 20,000 have since been added. The EPA has required very few of these to be tested for their impacts on human health and the environment. Now is the time to update the regulation on these chemicals.

Since 1976, 22,000 chemicals have been introduced.  The manufacturers have provided little to no information about their health or environmental impacts to the EPA. The chemicals are found in everything… toys, other children’s items, furniture, cleaning supplies, car interiors, food and beverage products.

It makes me want to wrap my children in little bubbles to protect them, especially since scientists have linked exposure to these chemicals to health risks. Even more scary is that even while babies are in the womb, exposure to certain toxic chemicals can be connected to disturbances in hormonal, reproductive and immune systems.

Cancer, learning disabilities, asthma, birth defects…

Scary stuff.

We need to #FightToxins by reforming this act and passing meaningful legislation NOW to ensure our children are not exposed to harmful and deadly toxins.

It’s not really difficult to try and protect our children. It starts with taking about 2 nanoseconds to go sign the petition at the Seventh Generation Fight Toxins website. When I just checked, we were at just over 81,000 of the needed 100,000 signatures.

Will you sign here, spread the word, and demand our representatives take action?

It’s really scary isn’t it? What is more frightening though, is the apathy about it.
