November 17th – World Prematurity Day

November 17, 2013 by katbiggie 5 Comments

World Prematurity Day

Today we’ll be joining hundreds of thousands of people in making our voices heard about prematurity.

If you’ve ever even had to spend ONE day in a NICU, you know it is not a fun place to be. Imagine spending 25 days there? Imagine EIGHT FOUR. That’s how long Tiny spent in the NICU. 12 weeks to the day.

Y’all, the complications that come from Prematurity are scary. Brain bleeds, bowel abruptions, feeding and breathing issues, heart, lung, eyesight, hearing and other complications. Higher risks for Cerebral Palsy and Autism. And prematurity is the largest reason for infant death. According to the March of Dimes, more than a million babies born each year will not survive because they are born too soon.

I had two preemies. Born at 30 weeks and 5 days. We only brought one home.

The good news is that there is so much that can be done and so much that HAS been done.

World Prematurity Day

These are my preemies:

On today, this World Prematurity Day 2013, can you spare $5 to help fund research on prematurity, birth defects, and newborn health? If so, Team Charis and Kat could really use your help!

We will continue the fight for babies!

Great cause and I am heading over. I spent six days in a NICU. Hospital time is measured in eons, I’m convinced. Six days felt like six weeks. I can’t imagine what 84 days felt like. Thinking of you today.

Thanks Tamara. Even 6 days can feel like a very long time in that environment!

I have never had to spend time in the NICU but I know many moms who have. It is terrible to have to go through. The March of Dimes does great work and I love how strong an advocate you are for them, Alexa! I’m going to share this on Simple Giving Lab.
