Cephrael's Hand

August 18, 2014 By katbiggie Leave a Comment

If you had to choose a super power, would you want to be a truth reader, a healer, have magical powers, or be immortal?

As I read the book Cephrael’s Hand, this is the question I asked myself. In this truly spellbinding epic fantasy, there are characters with all of these powers and more. I wish I had some of these powers in my daily life…

Cephrael’s Hand: the story of 1 man trying to save the realm he swore to protect, even if it means betraying people he loves. #epicfantansy

Cephrael’s Hand is the story of one man trying to save the realm he swore to protect, even if doing so means betraying people he loves. There are a multitude of pieces and players who follow him and fall beneath him.

Reading this book, I really connected with the underlying theme of a “test of honor.” The idea that, even while trying to set out to do good, sometimes the end result is not good. We choose paths that are not always in the best interest of those around us in order to meet our own goals.

While this was a fantasy about characters with powers that I’ll never possess (by the way, I think I’d choose the ability to heal as my super power) – I felt absolutely connected to this theme of doing whatever it takes to fight to protect something.

The characters – although there are a lot with very complicated pasts and backgrounds – are engaging. I had a difficult time keeping everyone straight initially, but as I got into the book, I came to know such a variety of key players. There’s something for everyone – pirates, princes, princesses, star-crossed lovers and philosopher-soldiers. Many of the characters surprise you along the way. And boy do they have some exciting adventures!

The story line, although complex, is spellbinding.  Good vs. evil never gets old in my eyes!

This is a big book y’all. I didn’t grasp the size and length of the book until I received a copy in the mail. It’s 628 big pages long. I like book books, and I cannot lie.

Especially GOOD books! And this book is good! Even though it took me a long time to read, I enjoyed chipping away at it. It provided a nice escape from my day to day life as mom, wife, and writer.

About the book: “All things are composed of patterns…” And within the pattern of the realm of Alorin, three strands must cross:

In Alorin… three hundred years after the genocidal Adept Wars, the realm is dying, and the blessed Adept race dies with it. One man holds the secret to reverting this decline: Bjorn van Gelderan, a dangerous and enigmatic man whose shocking betrayal three centuries past earned him a traitor’s brand. It is the Adept Vestal Raine D’Lacourte’s mission to learn what Bjorn knows in the hope of salvaging his race. But first he’ll have to find him.

In the kingdom of Dannym… the young Prince Ean val Lorian faces a tenuous future as the last living heir to the coveted Eagle Throne. When his blood-brother is slain during a failed assassination, Ean embarks on a desperate hunt for the man responsible. Yet his advisors have their own agendas, and his quest for vengeance leads him ever deeper into a sinuous plot masterminded by a mysterious and powerful man, the one they call First Lord.

In the Nadori desert…tormented by the missing pieces of his life, a soldier named Trell heads off to uncover the truth of his shadowed past. But when disaster places him in the debt of Wildlings sworn to the First Lord, Trell begins to suspect a deadlier, darker secret motivating them. Honor-bound to serve the First Lord in return for his life, Trell continues on his appointed path, yet each day unveils new and stranger secrets that eventually call into question everything he knows.

Love the concepts in this book and must admit it would be hard to decide, but immortal does sound great right about now, especially since many days I am tired and feeling my age!
