The Quilt – An Unexpected Act of Kindness

September 30, 2012 by katbiggie 1 Comment

If you ever have the opportunity to just do something nice for someone out of the blue, just do it.  Whether it may be taking a meal to someone, bringing a small gift, whatever it may be, you never know how you may impact that person.  I guess this is the whole concept behind the “pay it forward” movement, right?

So why am I randomly rambling about doing nice for others? We were so blessed and honored to be presented a beautifully hand made prayer quilt today.  This was such an amazing gesture for the following reasons:

1 – It’s not even our church that did this for us!  The pastor at this church is a long time (30 year) friend of the family who was our Chaplain when my family was stationed in Texas.  Over the years, his family has wound up stationed in nearly the same places as us, and our families have remained good friends.  Throughout our awful pregnancy, his church has prayed for us, lifted us up, sent cards, and looked out for us.  Pastor J baptized Kathryn in the hospital the day she passed, and later baptized Tiny in his church.

2 – When Tiny was baptized, some of the ladies in the church realized they should make us a prayer quilt, like they do for members in the church.  So they got to work putting together this beautiful quilt for Tiny, in memory of her sister Kathryn.

3. It’s difficult to see, but the inscription is embroidered on, and it is just beautiful.
4. They called us up to present and pray over the quilt.  Then, at the end of the service, in the last song, anyone who wanted to tied a knot in the strings on the quilt (can’t really be seen in the picture) as a symbol of their prayers for Tiny, and her angel sister.  It took all I had not to break down as I watched all of these strangers file up to the front of the church to tie a knot in her quilt.  My heart was melted.
5. Tiny has a very special keepsake and memory now of all of the strangers and people who prayed and prayed for her and her sister.  What a blessed child!
I know that there are so many people hurting today.  It’s not just my family.  I am sure there is someone around you who could use a phone call, a card, a meal, a hug… anything.  Won’t you be the one to brighten their day?

This is an amazing story of the community around you enfolding you (and your family) in their love, thoughts and prayers. The quilt is beautiful. Thank you for sharing this – a very touching post.
