Igniting the Mommy Energy

August 1, 2014 By katbiggie 10 Comments

I need more Mommy Energy!

I met Lizzy through my blogger friend Kerry at Breadwinning Mama. She and I have a lot in common. We both have three kids almost the same ages. She’s also an author and I learned that she had recently published a book for moms – Igniting Mommy Energy – and was conducting a blog tour. I immediately asked to be a part of it. I just got my copy in the mail yesterday, and I can’t wait to read through it, cause the good Lord above knows, I am lacking in the Mommy Energy these days. Once I finish it, you can expect a review, but for now, I’ve got a special guest post from Liz!

Waking Up Your Mommy Energy

I had a hard day at work and all I wanted to do was jump into bed and pull the covers over my head.

I wasn’t in the mood to think about my emotional state.

BUT! If I swept my emotions under the rug my Mommy Energy would continue to plummet.

When my Mommy Energy is low it’s difficult to take care of the things I care about the most. Yes, I can keep going, because this precious energy source, Mommy Energy, enables me to do just that. But my “quality” isn’t the best and I’m not happy. I get snippy with the kids or give my husband the silent treatment. This is when I know I need rest and tender loving self-care.

So how can I refocus my Mommy Energy to enhance my emotional state when I HAVE no Mommy Energy?

I needed some shut eye but I also needed to calm down. Here’s what I did before my head hit the pillow.

1. Set a bedtime.

It was not the night to burn the midnight oil. By 9PM I knew I’d have to call it quits. We crave structure just like our kids do, so why not follow their example and set a bed time! I avoided rushing around the house to meet my self-imposed “deadline”. My attitude was if I can’t do all tonight then it wasn’t meant to be done. I’ve learned that when I argue with reality, I lose.

2. Enjoy a bedtime routine.

I shut my “screens” (laptop, TV, iPhone) off half an hour before bed. I take a short warm shower, get into my PJs, floss and brush my teeth, moisturize, and then hop into bed. During this cool down I focus my thoughts on all the good things that happened that day. I woke up this morning. I got the kids to school. I finished work projects. I got the kids to bed. I’m going to bed early!! Hurray!!

3. Get into bed with pen and paper in hand.

Nothing is worse than closing my eyes and having stress, sadness, or guilt flood my thoughts. So anything that I wanted to sweep under the rug and forget about I write about. I lay to rest my emotional state. When I put the paper down I find comfort in reality. I am lying down in bed. I am under the blankets. My children are sound asleep and safe. I am clean. There is nothing to worry about in this moment because life is good. Right. Now.

4. Wake up and process “it”.

The next morning an answer seems more possible after sleeping on “it”. After reading the worries I wrote about I ask “Hey you, how are you feeling?” Then I make myself write about the answer.

Whenever I feel my Mommy Energy dip at the end of the day I run through this process. It’s no fun feeling tired and cranky because of all the emotions that bubble up during the day. Ignoring how we feel is like not accepting a beautifully wrapped gift.  It takes courage to unwrap this gift but when it opens up you’ll find clarity and confidence and a boost in your Mommy Energy.

Great tips and I agree a routine totally helps and being able to jot down my list of the things to do also takes the extra burden and weight off my shoulders before I go to sleep at night, as well.

Glad you liked the tips, Janine!! Although I didn’t like bedtime as a child, I certainly love the limit or boundary as an adult!

I really need to start doing #2. Lately I’ve been looking at some kind of screen until the moment I try to fall asleep, which I know is terrible for my brain and my sleep patterns. Tonight I’m going to try your method of “shutting down” 30 minutes before going to bed. I’m sure it will be good for me!

      Awesome, Katie!

When my one year-old wakes up in the middle of the night and I sleepily go to fill up her milk I’ll steal a glance at my iPhone. If I don’t resist this temptation then it’s challenging to fall back to sleep! Darn screens! So good, yet so bad. 🙂

      Have a great weekend!

I really like these tips. (And I should really be listening to #2 right now.) I like the idea of writing down the things I want to let go at bedtime. I may try that now! Looking forward to the book review.
